Hi, I’m Rhys Roberts, a 24-year-old site engineer for Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK. I’ve been with the company for eight years now, and have mostly been working on wind farm developments across the UK. One of the first sites I worked on was the huge 60 turbine Crystal Rig II wind farm near Dunbar in Scotland. I’m currently working on-site on the Jones Bros Balfour Beatty JV project constructing a 76 turbine Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm JV between Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taff.
I’ve been with Jones Bros since 2007, having been offered an apprenticeship after doing work experience here as part of my A levels. The company has given me plenty of opportunities to build up my skills and experience, and in 2012 I was named runner up in the Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer category in the CECA Wales awards. Earlier this year, I also became the first former trainee at Jones Bros to complete their registration with the ICE, which I’m extremely proud of.
Personally, being part of this sector is something I have always wanted. And as long as renewable projects need constructing, the demand for site engineers will always be there, which means that there will be opportunities for aspiring engineers to get into the industry.
