My name is Julian Brown and I am the Chairman of RenewableUK. I have been Chair of RenewableUK since 2014 and as you might expect, the challenges and highlights have closely reflected those of the industry it represents. Our industry is active in informing and, hopefully, influencing government on issues of policy that affect our members. In the meantime we also provide significant benefits to our members in services, information, events and networking opportunities.

I grew my career in manufacturing in the electronic and aviation sectors making everything from measuring equipment and traffic lights to aircraft seats. In 2000 I joined NEG Micon (now Vestas) to run the blades business which was moving to the Isle of Wight. I quickly discovered the unique and inspiring qualities of the wind industry!

It’s a delicate balancing act between my day-to-day job and being Chairman, but I always remind myself that I am there to support Hugh McNeal and his team. My day job is my own technical consultancy, 8.2Aarufield, which is growing fast, so there is always some pressure but it does mean I really understand the challenges for other small businesses in the sector. My clients are also often at the same RenewableUK events that I attend so that’s an opportunity rather than a challenge!
