To do a job like mine you will need the basics to start working on wind turbines such as working at height, sea survival if you are working offshore, and first aid. Having any kind of mechanical background will also help. I would advise anyone interested to do their research and look at all the different roles and focus on the qualifications they will need to start their new career. Hi I’m Barry. I am on an offshore wind work placement with Ørsted, working closely with Vestas engineers and technicians. Prior to this I was in training at Maersk in Newcastle.

I got into renewables after working as a trainer in a college, delivering level 3 NVQ and diplomas in plumbing and heating. One of the units I taught consisted of ground source, solar, wave and wind energy. I found myself pushing my students to the renewable industry as I believe it will be the next big thing.
